Jessica Cutt is a photographer working exclusively with analogue film to explore the environments, rituals, and atmospheres surrounding surfing and skateboarding. Currently completing an MA in Photography at the University of Brighton. Her practice moves beyond documenting action alone, instead focusing on the emotional and sensory traces these intentional activities leave behind — the tension of waiting, the intimacy of shared spaces, the physicality of landscape, and the quiet moments that exist before and after movement.

Her work examines the phenomenology of surfing and skateboarding: how these experiences are understood through the body, through place, and through collective feeling. Working with analogue film enables a slower and more attentive process in which texture, light, grain, and imperfection become essential to conveying affect and memory. The photographs are less concerned with spectacle and more with presence, exploring the subtle ways emotion, atmosphere, and lived experience can be held within an image.

Cutt’s photographs often centre on peripheral spaces — coastlines, car parks, ramps, changing light, worn surfaces, and the communities that gather around them. These environments become sites of repetition, anticipation, freedom, and belonging. Through analogue photography, she creates tactile and embodied images that seek to evoke not only what these places look like, but what they feel like to inhabit.
